A number of countries around the world are making biolubricants a priority in their transportation sector. The European Union, in particular, has adopted legislation to mandate the use of biolubricant in areas near non-navigable bodies of water, such as rivers and estuaries. The Netherlands' Ministry of Environment has also issued a policy in support of bio lubricant, known as VAMIL, which permits accelerated depreciation of environmental investments.

According to Coherent Market Insights the Biolubricants Market Size, Share, Outlook, and Opportunity Analysis, 2022-2028

The environmental fate of biolubricants is determined by the percentage of additives they contain. In simple oils, only about one percent of the additives are present; in gearbox lubricants and metalworking fluids, the proportions are much higher. Most commercial lubricating oils are composed of ninety percent base oil and ten percent additives. Biolubricant have a range of properties including improved flow, lubricity, anti-wear, and ageing.

The viscosity of plant oils and fatty acids is a quantitative measure of the resistance to flow. They are often named according to their viscosity. Typically, viscosity measurements are based on Newtonian fluids, in which the resistance to flow is linearly proportional to the rate of shear. Bio lubricant with a high viscosity have a low tendency to break down under oxidative conditions.

Moreover, bio lubricants are rapidly biodegradable and non-toxic to living things. Biodegradability is an important yardstick for the environmental friendliness of substances. As science advances, scientists are identifying safe, economical, and environmentally friendly ways to improve biolubricant properties. When considering bio lubricants for a specific application, it is important to use "green" bio lubricants. These compounds are not only environmentally friendly, however, are highly beneficial to all users.

As oil prices continue to rise, more environmentally-friendly lubricants have become popular. Several factors, including rising crude oil prices, dwindling natural resources, and global climatic change, have led to the rise of biodegradable lubricants. Increasing environmental awareness has also spurred the use of biodegradable lubricants. Bio lubricants are considered green, renewable, and non-toxic, and are often manufactured from a renewable source. In August 2021, Emery Oleochemicals, a global leader in specialty chemicals launched a new website for its bio-lubricants business unit.
