Medical Elastomers are Used in Several Applications Such as for Medical Device Components, Bags for Infusion Solutions, Implants and Disposables
Medical Elastomers |
One of the major
applications for Medical Elastomers is the manufacturing of medical tubes.
These devices are used for the diagnosis and treatment of different types of
diseases. Due to their low cost, biocompatibility, and easy availability, these
tubes are made from medical elastomer. Plasticized PVC is being phased out of
the medical elastomer industry due to environmental and regulatory issues
related to incineration, recycling, and transmission of plasticizers. Moreover,
new EU regulations are forcing the medical device industry to make a change and
replace PVC with TPEs or silicone elastomers.
The global Medical Elastomers Market was valued at US$ 7,103.15 Mn in 2021 and is forecast to reach a value of US$ 11,762.94 Mn by 2028 at a CAGR of 7.6%between 2022 and 2028.
High-performance Medical
Elastomer - Thermoplastic elastomers, or TPEs, are the most common types of
medical elastomer used in surgical instruments. These medical elastomers are
flexible and biocompatible and are thus, a great choice for high-performance
devices. They are also used to create prosthetic liners and orthopedic
bandages. These materials offer high resistance to impact and provide a natural
skin-like feel.
Thermoplastic elastomer is a relatively new polymer material. These polymers have excellent sterilization and flexibility properties. They can also be molded into a variety of shapes. They have excellent wear and tear resistance. Further, thermoplastic elastomers are compatible with various temperatures. This material is commonly used in protective packaging and personal protective equipment. In the medical industry, it is used mainly in primary medical device packaging.
Medalist MD-200 Series elastomers offer high flexibility and elasticity for various medical devices. These materials meet ISO 7886 requirements for single-use hypodermic syringes. They also have low friction coefficient for steady travel force in polypropylene and glass barrels. PolyOne GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers recently announced new Versalloy HC grades that target medical devices with long, thin flow paths. The new elastomers are highly colorable and tactile. In September 2021, Hexpol TPE, a Sweden-
