A face shield is a personal protective equipment (PPE) used to protect the face of the wearer from a biological hazards, physical hazard, energy or radiation, and/or chemical splashes. Face shields cover the face from the eyebrows to below the chin and the entire width of the head. These shields come in various forms, such as reusable or disposable, but all provide a clear plastic barrier that covers the face. They are manufactured using different materials including acetate, propionate, polycarbonate, and polyethylene terephthalate glycol.
They provide a high level of protection for the wearer. Face shields cover the whole face (mouth, nose, and eyes) a high percentage of viral particles are prevented from reaching a wearer. Wearing face shield is recommended as part of personal protective equipment (PPE) and as a public health measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). In the last two years (2022-2021), the use of face shield has increased as a tool to help exit lockdown and prevent further spikes in infections of COVID-19.
The global Face Shields Market was valued at US$ 3,371.1 Mn in 2021 and is forecast to reach a value of US$ 3,054.9 Mn by 2028 at a CAGR of 2.4% between 2022 and 2028.
They are excellent at preventing droplets from coming into contact with the nose, mouth, and eyes, where the virus enters to establish infection. The demand or use of Face Shields had increased due to the outbreak of COVID-19 across the world. HSS2020 (face shield made in Germany) provides outstanding protection against infections, and is designed for medical and nursing staff in hospitals, emergency services, nursing and care homes, and outpatient services, but also for those working in industry, retail, trade, and service occupations.
Moreover, using the Fugaku supercomputer, a group of Japanese researchers developed the face shield that can more effectively block airborne droplets and reduce exposure to the coronavirus for diners at pubs and restaurants.
