Algae a Diverse Group of Organisms That Have the Ability to Conduct Photosynthesis

Algae is an informal term for a large and diverse group of photosynthetic eukaryotic organisms. It is a group of predominantly photosynthetic, aquatic, and nucleus-bearing organisms that lack the true leaves, stems, roots, and specialized multicellular reproductive structures of plants. Alga are sometimes considered plants and sometimes considered protists (a category of organisms that are grouped on the basis of not being plants, animals, bacteria, fungi, or archaeans). Alga are a diverse group of aquatic organisms that have the ability to conduct photosynthesis.

Algae are eukaryotic, photoautotrophic organisms that are able to use the sun’s energy to produce carbohydrates and oxygen. They are also a significant source of nitrogen for aquatic environments. Algal species are found in a wide variety of habitats, including lakes, rivers, ponds, and oceans. They can be small single-celled organisms that are difficult to see or large ocean kelps that can grow up to 300 feet long. Some Alga are toxic to humans and some serve as indicators of pollution. Others are important in marine ecosystems as a source of food, oxygen and phytoplankton.

According to Coherent Market Insights the Algae Market Size, Share, Outlook, and Opportunity Analysis, 2019 – 2027.

There are two broad groups of Alga: those that are photoautotrophic and those that are symbiotic. Both groups have chloroplasts and the pigments that give them their color. Green Alga are a group of organisms that are used to conduct photosynthesis for higher organisms and have the primary photosynthetic pigments chlorophyll a and b. They are commonly used as a source of vitamins A, B2, C, and Omega-3 fatty acids. They are also rich in iron, zinc, and magnesium. Blue-green Alga are prokaryotic organisms that live in moist or aquatic environments.

One of the most popular Natural Sweeteners is stevia, which is derived from the Stevia rebaudiana plant and is known for its natural sweetness and low calorie content. Stevia has been gaining popularity as a sugar alternative due to its use as a sugar substitute in a wide range of food and beverage products, including soft drinks, baked goods, and confectionery.

The Algae Collection of the US National Herbarium consists of around 320,500 dried specimens, which gives an idea of the order of magnitude of the number of algal species. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), harmful algal blooms are a major environmental problem in all 50 states. Red tides, blue-green Alga, and cyanobacteria are examples of harmful blooms that can have severe impacts on human health, aquatic ecosystems, and the economy.
