Cephalosporin Drugs a Type of Antibiotic Used To Treat a Variety of Bacterial Infections
Cephalosporin drugs are large group beta-lactam antibiotics used to manage a range of infections from gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The five generations of cephalosporins are useful against skin infection, meningitis, resistant bacteria, and other infections. Cephalosporin is widely used to treat several bacterial infections, such as skin infections, eye infections, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, upper respiratory tract infection, sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis, otitis media, pneumonia, and bacterial meningitis.
Cephalosporin drug are broad-spectrum antibiotics. They kill bacteria by inhibiting the bacterial cell wall synthesis. They are part of a class of antibiotics called beta-lactams, which also include amoxicillin clavulanate and vancomycin. Cefazolin (a parenteral formulation) and cephalexin (an oral equivalent) are first-generation cephalosporins that are effective against gram-positive bacilli, including S. aureus and group A streptococcus, and gram-negative bacilli, such as Pseudomonas species. They are also used to treat urinary tract infections and skin and soft tissue infections.
Second-generation cephalosporin drug are more active against gram-negative bacilli compared to first-generation cephalosporin drugs, and they are often used to treat complicated intra-abdominal sepsis. These drugs are commonly used for respiratory tract infections and uncomplicated urinary tract infections. Third-generation cephalosporins have a wider spectrum of activity compared to first-generation cephalosporins. They are often used to treat bacterial pneumonia. They are useful to treat infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and other types of resistant bacteria.
The global Cephalosporin Drugs Market size was valued at US$ 14,240.0 million in 2018, and is expected to witness a CAGR of 3.8% over the forecast period (2019 – 2026).
Different generations of cephalosporin drugs are preferred or used for different indications. Most commonly used cephalosporin drug are cefaclor, cefdinir, cefixime, ceftriaxone, and cephalexin. The third-generation cephalosporin is a group of broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, and the most prescribed generation of cephalosporin; useful in a variety of clinical situations. Thereby, with the increase in burden of infectious diseases, the demand for cephalosporin drug\ is also increasing with a rapid pace worldwide, especially in the United States.
In November 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved cefiderocol (Fetroja) to treat complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI), including pyelonephritis caused by susceptible Gram-negative bacteria, in patients with limited or no alternative treatment options.
