Computer Keyboards Are A Key Part Of Computer's User Interface And Provide A Way To Input Information

Computer keyboards serve as the primary means of controlling computer. Many are multifunctional, programmable, or even have additional functions to provide users with access to multiple sources. The standard computer keyboard (QWERTY design) features the letter, number and punctuation keys that match the layouts of typewriters. Some keyboards have a Dvorak layout that organizes the keys differently, and some contain the "spacebar," "Tab," "Shift" and "Caps Lock" keys in an arrangement that mirrors those of self-correcting typewriters. Generally, the top row of keys on a standard keyboard is dedicated to letters, numbers and punctuation. The middle row contains the function and control keys, and the bottom row consists of arranged arrow keys that are used to perform numerous functions.

There are many different types of computer keyboards, including wireless, wired and membrane. The wireless types usually connect to the computer using Bluetooth or an RF receiver, while wired keyboards use USB cables.

The global Computer Keyboards Market was valued at US$ 5,178.6 Mn in terms of value and expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.3% during the forecast period.

Some keyboards are designed with particular uses in mind, such as gaming keyboards or ergonomic ones that work well for users who spend a lot of time typing. Others are more flexible, such as touch screen keyboards that may replace traditional keyboards in the future.

Mechanical keyboards feature individual switches that have plungers that are electrically actuated by the key pressed. The depth of the plunger that must be pressed for the key to close the contacts is called the activation distance. Some keys require the plunger to be fully pressed down, while other keys only activate the switch when the key is half-way pressed down. Other types of switches include membrane switches that have pressure pads instead of separate, moving keys. These are often difficult to use as computer keyboards, since they don't provide much tactile feedback. In general, mechanical keyboards have more resistance to wear than membrane keyboards. A good quality keyboard can last for a long time without needing to be serviced.
