Light Therapy is Becoming Popular for Treating Various Conditions Such As Depression, Sleep Disorders and Others

Light Therapy is an alternative treatment for depression, sleep disorders and other conditions that do not respond to medication. It is effective for many patients and offers a low risk of side effects. Several studies have shown that exposure to bright lights can significantly improve mood and behavior. These effects occur through a variety of mechanisms, including activation of serotonin and other monoaminergic pathways, enhancement of alertness and sleep homeostasis, and phase shifting of the circadian rhythm.

Research shows that light treatment reduces symptoms of SAD and improves overall well-being in people with SAD. Symptoms of SAD can include feelings of sadness, fatigue, weight gain and poor concentration. In most cases, the symptoms of SAD are resolved in a matter of weeks after starting light therapy. Red and NIR (near infrared) light can accelerate the high-energy molecule ATP production, which energizes cells. This process can promote cellular repair, reduce scar tissue, increase collagen production and increase cell communication to speed up recovery from injury.

The global Light Therapy Market is estimated to be valued at US$ 874.0 Mn in 2020 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 4.9% over the forecast period (2020-2027).

Red light can be beneficial in reducing pain from joint and muscle problems, such as arthritis. The light can activate stem cells in the muscle called myosatellite cells, which are responsible for forming new, healthy muscle tissue. Both red and NIR light can accelerate recovery from injury by reducing fibrosis — the hard, scar-like tissues that form after muscle injuries. Fibrosis can limit person’s mobility, prevent them from getting back to normal activities and cause permanent damage to muscles.

It also supports the formation of new, healthy muscle tissue by triggering stem cells in the muscle called myosatellite cell, which are responsible for forming new, strong muscle tissue. These cells are able to communicate more effectively with each other, and when they do, they produce the proteins and factors that enable the muscles to function better. In September 2021, GlobalMed Technologies launched Omnilux CLEAR, the first at-home light therapy mask approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat acne.
