Magnesite is a refractory mineral and is used for many industrial applications such as fireproofing, flooring, and fire extinguishing compositions. It is also a common component of fertilizers. It is usually white with brown or grayish veins, however, can be a rare transparent crystal form (called facetable magnetite). It has a chalky, porous texture and is rated 3.5-4.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. The most common and popular variety is hydromagnesite, which is mined in many countries worldwide. It is a milky white mineral that has variable amounts of iron, calcium, magnesium and aluminum. It is often cut and polished into beads, and it can be dyed to create a wide range of bold colors. Along with its refractory uses, it is also used in water treatment. It is a natural desiccant that can absorb heavy metals and ions from liquid streams making it useful for filtering. Magnetite is a rare mineral that occurs in a variety of assemblages. It is found in a wide range of rocks from ultramafic to sedimentary, and is usually accompanied by other minerals such as quartz or feldspar. It is often diagenetic, meaning that it has been derived from low-temperature metamorphism of ultramafic rocks.

Magnesite is a member of the calcite group of carbonate minerals. Like other calcite-like minerals, it is a calcium-carbonate mineral that forms in a variety of chemical reactions with other minerals and metals, such as magnesium, potassium, and sodium.
