Renal Denervation Devices a Potential Therapeutic Option for Patients with Resistant Hypertension
Renal denervation (RDN) devices are medical devices used in minimally invasive procedures to treat resistant hypertension. It is a safe and effective procedure for people with treatment‐resistant hypertension with a clinically significant antihypertensive effect. A procedure uses radiofrequency ablation to burn the nerves in the renal arteries. Renal denervation causes a reduction in the nerve activity, which decreases blood pressure. This minimally invasive procedure removes nerves from the renal artery (which leads to the kidneys).
RDN can reduce/eliminate need for blood pressure medication. Renal denervation ablates afferent and efferent sympathetic nerves in the adventitia of renal arteries. Renal denervation devices are inserted percutaneously into the femoral artery and advanced into the main renal arteries under the fluoroscopic guidance. Renal denervation is catheter-based procedure used to treat resistant hypertension (blood pressure not controlled by drug), using ultrasound ablation or radiofrequency ablation. Renal denervation therapy (RDT) is a relatively new, catheterization-based intervention to treat people with refractory hypertension. The rationale of RDT is the mechanical destruction with high frequency ablation of renal sympathetic fibers, which can be easily accessed via the renal artery. Currently, no renal denervation device is approved in the United States, which limits the treatment to investigational use. However, the procedure is available in several other countries. Medtronic and ReCor Medical have competing devices that are approved for use in Europe.
